WPL 2023: Marizzane Kapp And Alice Capsey Shine As Delhi Capitals Thrash Mumbai Indians By 9 Wickets

Marizzane Kapp and Alice Capsey were the star performers for Delhi Capitals as they thrashed Mumbai Indians by 9 wickets at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

The win for DC keeps them in the hunt to top the WPL table and gain direct qualification in the final. DC captain Meg Lanning won the toss for her side and elected to bowl first.

MI started the game slowly with openers Yastika Bhati and Hayley Matthews scoring at a run rate of just 3 in the first two over. Then Marizanne Kapp provided the first breakthrough, getting rid of Yastika, and followed it up by cleaning up the dangerous Nat Sciver-Brunt for a golden duck.

Matthews was the next one to fall as Shikha Pandey picked up her first wicket, leaving MI reeling at 10/3. Arundhati Reddy came into the attack and dismissed Amelia Kerr, who scored 8 runs off 16 balls. Then Pooja Vastrakar played an against-the-tide knock to bring MI back in the game but couldn’t convert her start into a big score, and was dismissed by Jess Jonassen after scoring 26 runs off 19 deliveries.

MI skipper Harmanpreet Kaur struck around for a while but never really looked comfortable in the middle and was the next one to fall as Shikha picked up her second wicket of the game. Harmanpreet scored 23 runs off 26 balls, hitting three boundaries.

Issy Wong and Amanjot Kaur provided a late flourish for Mumbai, to help them cross the 100-run mark. Wong scored 23 runs off 24 balls, while Amanjot amassed 19 runs off 16 deliveries, to guide MI to a total of 109/8 in 20 overs. Kapp was the pick of the bowlers, claiming two wickets and giving away just 13 runs in four overs.

In the second innings, DC openers Lanning and Shafali Verma came out all guns blazing and started smashing the Mumbai bowlers around. The two openers smashed 50 runs in the first 4 overs, before Shafali was stumped by Yastika. Shafali scored 33 runs off 15 balls, hitting six boundaries and a solitary six.

Alice Capsey picked up where Shafali left off and started raining sixes from the get-go. Capsey remained unbeaten on 38 off 17 balls, smashing one boundary and five sixes. Capsey was supported by Lanning, who remained unbeaten on 32 off 22 balls, guiding DC to a 9 wicket win with 11 overs remaining.
