Trinamool, BJP to continue protests in Kolkata today over doctor rape-murder

Multiple rallies and protests by West Bengal’s ruling party, the Trinamool Congress.

And the opposition BJP are scheduled to be held in Kolkata on Sunday in response to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the city.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s party will continue its protest demanding a death sentence for the accused and a change in the law to ensure stricter punishment after 21 days of the incident.

Meanwhile, the BJP will continue its seven-day protest in Kolkata against the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool government.

A non-political ‘Maha Michhil’ (mega rally) will also take place from College Square to Esplanade on Sunday afternoon, news agency PTI reported.

“This is a non-political front and the movement was conceived on social media. It is set to register a turnout of thousands,” a protester was quoted as saying.

Union minister and state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar had earlier said that the protesters want the Chief Minister to resign from her post.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal government has convened a special assembly session on Monday to table a new bill which would ensure capital punishment for convicted rapists.

A 31-year-old woman doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of the RG Kar hospital on August 9. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer of the Kolkata Police, was arrested after the police found a Bluetooth device near the crime spot. CCTV footage also showed him on the third floor of the hospital where the seminar hall is situated.

The case is being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
