Thousands of demonstrators marched against abortion legalisation in Mexico.
Raising slogans and holding placards at Mexico Citys iconic Reforma avenue on Sunday, protestors gathered wearing blue handkerchiefs a symbol adopted by the anti-abortion movement in Latin America. The demonstrators carried a large statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
The march was in favour of women, life and peace, the events organizers wrote in a statement. Laura Paz, who travelled from the neighbouring state of Puebla to attend the march, told Reuters she considered it unfair that many states in Mexico were trying to legalize abortion.
This is the defence of the children who are about to be born. They have no voices, but they do have rights. For us it is unfair they want to legalize abortion in different parts of Mexico,” Paz said.
On the other hand, another anti-abortion demonstrator said, “This is a demonstration in favour of women, life and peace. The causes that move us are Mexicans desire to live in peace, and for our human dignity and human rights to be respected. The State needs to guarantee and recognise these, because we have human rights just because we are human.
Abortion is legal up to 12 weeks of pregnancy in only nine of Mexico’s 32 states, but in September 2021 the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that penalising abortion is unconstitutional.
