Zika virus infection is continuously spreading in Pune, Maharashtra. Two more cases were reported on Monday.

With this, the total number of confirmed cases in the city has increased to six, out of which both the new cases are related to pregnant women living in Erandwane.

The first case of Zika in Pune was reported by a doctor and his teenage daughter, who live in the same area where the two new cases were reported. Following his positive test result, health officials conducted inspection and collected samples from the affected area. On Saturday, it was confirmed that a pregnant woman from Erandwane and a 22-year-old man from Mundhwa had also tested positive for the virus.

Zika confirmed in two pregnant women
Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) health officer Dr Kalpana Baliwant said that of the 25 samples collected, 12 were from Erandwane, of which seven were from pregnant women. Zika was confirmed in two of these pregnant women. An additional 13 samples were collected from Mundhwa, none of which tested positive for Zika in the pregnant women.

Efforts are being made to prevent infection
Pregnant women infected with Zika are considered at higher risk, so health officials are conducting anomaly scans for them and increasing surveillance in both affected areas. The spread of Zika virus in Pune is a matter of concern. Efforts are being made to control it and prevent further infection.

Advice given to monitor health
Residents in affected areas have been advised to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites and monitor their health for any symptoms of Zika. PMC is working closely with health officials to track and contain the spread of the virus in Pune. PMC is urging citizens to follow the guidelines and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of Zika virus. They have assured that they are closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary measures to control the spread of the virus in the city.

First case came to light in Erandwane
According to news agency PTI, the official said, ‘The first case of Zika virus infection was reported in Erandwane, where the report of a 46-year-old doctor came positive. After that his 15 year old daughter was also found infected with this infection. After this, two cases were reported from Mundhwa, in which a 47-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man were infected with Zika virus.
