An SUV hit two men riding a bike at the intersection of Delhi’s Kasturba Gandhi Marg and Tolstoy Marg on the intervening night of April 29 and 30.
After the car hit the bike, Mukul (20) jumped away from the vehicle while Dipanshu Verma (30) fell on the roof of the car which hit them.
The SUV did not stop and carried Dipanshu’s body for around 3 kilometres.
An eyewitness, Mohammad Bilal, followed the car on his scooter and took a video of Dipanshu’s body lying on the car’s roof. The car did not stop despite Bilal’s efforts to alert the driver by honking and shouting.
After driving non-stop for around three kilometres, the accused threw down Dipanshu’s body near India Gate and fled.
Dipanshu Verma died from the accident while his cousin Mukul got severely injured and is currently in a critical condition.
The Delhi Police registered a case of murder over the incident and the suspect, identified as Harneet Sngh Chawla, has been arrested. His family was in the car with him.
Dipanshu Verma used to run a jewellery shop and was an only son. He is survived by his parents and a sister.
This incident comes months after Anjali Singh, a 20-year-old woman riding a two-wheeler, was hit by a car and dragged to death from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala for 10 to 12 kilometres.
