Shubman Gill catch controversy: Glenn McGrath says he was happy with the call

Glenn McGrath has opened up on the controversial dismissal of Shubman Gill during the WTC Final against Australia and said he was happy with the decision made in the end by the third umpire.

Australia had set India a target of 444 to win and the Indian team started their chase on a very positive note as Rohit Sharma and Gill got off to a flyer, scoring 41 runs in 7.2 overs.

However, at the stroke of tea on Day 4, Gill was given out in a controversial moment in the match. In the first delivery of the 8th over bowled by Scott Boland, Gill was undone by the extra bounce on The Oval pitch as the ball hit the shoulder of his bat when he was lunging forward. The ball flew to the slip cordon where Cameron Green dived to his left and took a one-handed catch.

While Green took the catch while his fingers were in the air, the point of discussion was whether the ball touched the ground before the all-rounder completed his dive.

The third umpire, Richard Kettleborough, took his time to analyse the catch from multiple angles. Ultimately, he gave the decision as out, much to the dismay of fans and Gill. This has courted a lot of opinion in the past few days from fans and pundits, with McGrath also providing his view.

The legendary pacer said, as quoted by PTI, that he thinks most of such catches are out and was happy with the call in the end. McGrath said that if the roles had been reversed and India had got the reward for such a catch, he would have still been happy.

”I think most of those catches are out. We find ways to give it not out which I like to go the other way. So, I was happy with it. And if it was India taking that catch, I would have been happy too. I’m not just saying from an Australian perspective but the way it goes,” said McGrath.

Gill had taken a jibe at the third umpire following the decision and ended up getting a fine on Monday from the ICC for his response on social media.
