India stand-in coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar heaped praise on young batter Richa Ghosh and said that she has a bright future in store.

Ghosh made her debut for India as a 16-year-old and has got quite a significant amount of taste of international cricket. The 19-year-old has already played 17 ODIs and 30 T20Is in which she has scored 738 runs with two half-centuries to show for her efforts.

Ghosh is high on confidence after she recently won the U19 T20 World Cup in South Africa. Ghosh also looked in ominous form when India faced Nigar Sultana Joty’s Bangladesh in a warm-up match of the Women’s World Cup 2023 on February 8.

Richa scored an unbeaten 91 off 56 balls with the help of three fours and nine sixes. On the back of her knock, India put up a score of 183 for five and eventually went on to secure a 52-run victory.

“She’s an exciting prospect. She has a good future in front of her. If she continues to work hard and if all those things go well, and she maintains the right attitude which she has, then the sky is the limit,” Kanitkar was quoted as saying in the pre-match press conference.

Kanitkar also said that Shikha Pandey, who made a comeback to the Indian squad recently, is going to play an important part for India in their campaign. Pandey bowled seven overs in the T20I tri-series in South Africa, but failed to pick up a wicket.

“She will play a vital role at some point or other. Experience does count. I have seen it too many times in the past as well. She is going to make a difference to us. Also, she bats well, which many people don’t know. So it works well for us,” Kanitkar added.

India’s first match is against Bismah Maroof’s Pakistan on Sunday, February 11 at the Newlands in Cape Town.
