A Pune court on Friday granted bail to Vishal Agarwal, the father of teen who allegedly ran over two engineers while driving his Porsche in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar on May 19.

Agarwal, arrested on May 21, was granted bail in one case pertaining to the Juvenile Justice Act, PTI reported. The owner of reality firm Brahma Group was booked under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act (MVA) and the Juvenile Justice Act (JJA) for ‘failing to do his duty as a guardian’.

The police action was taken after it was found that the Porsche car that he bought for his son in March this year had not been registered as he did not pay ₹44 lakh road tax on the car. The minor son did not have a driving license.

Anish Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa, the two software engineers hailing from Madhya Pradesh, were killed after the Porsche allegedly driven by the 17-year-old teenager in a drunken state hit them in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar in the wee hours of May 19.

On June 14, the Pune court sent the teenager’s parents and another accused to 14-day judicial custody. Vishal Agarwal and Shivani Agarwal and the alleged middleman Ashpak Makandar are facing investigation for alleged switching of blood samples of the teenager to establish that he was not in an inebriated state at the time of accident.

Makandar is accused of acting as a middleman between the Agarwals and doctors at the Sassoon General Hospital where blood samples are collected in such cases.

It is alleged that blood samples of the teenager’s mother, Shivani Agarwal, were used as a replacement.

The teenager was granted bail the same day by the JJB, which ordered that he be kept under the care and supervision of his parents and grandfather. He was also asked to write a 300-word essay on road safety. Amid a nationwide uproar, the police appealed to the JJB to amend the bail order. On May 22, the board ordered the boy to be taken into custody and remanded him to an observation home.
