PM Modi, Egypt’s President discuss threat to regional security amid Israel-Gaza war
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday held a discussion with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on call to discuss the latest developments in the Israeli operations in the Gaza Strip.
PM Modi said he and El-Sisi “exchanged views on the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in West Asia”. Both leaders agreed on the need for early restoration of peace and facilitating humanitarian assistance to those affected by the war which has killed over 9,000 people.
A statement released by the Egyptian side said PM Modi and El-Sisi also discussed how the war was impacting the lives of civilians and the threat it poses to the security of the entire region.
The Egyptian President said his government is pursuing efforts to push for a ceasefire. According to a report by news agency PTI, he spoke on the critical need for unified international action to find a prompt solution at the diplomatic level, with a focus on reinforcing an immediate humanitarian truce and protecting the lives of civilians.
El-Sisi also supported the unfettered delivery of humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip as was stated in the resolution passed at the United Nations General Assembly on October 27.
India had abstained from voting on the draft resolution, which was passed with 121 votes in its favour. Egypt was one of the countries which voted for the resolution to be passed.
On the other hand, Egypt had voted against an amendment to the draft resolution which proposed to add a paragraph condemning the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 and the taking of hostages by the group. India had voted in its favour.
The paragraph was not added as it failed to get the two-thirds of the majority needed.
