An alleged poisoning attempt has reportedly been made on ousted Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, sources claim.

The former leader, removed from power by rebels, has been under the protection of Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow since December 8 last year.

However, according to a social media account, named General SVR, run by a former spy in Russia, Assad fell ill on Sunday. He sought medical help and then began to “cough violently and choke”.

“There is every reason to believe an assassination attempt was made,” the account claimed.

Assad was reportedly treated in his apartment, and his condition was said to have stabilized by Monday.
