Player of the series in the recently concluded India vs New Zealand Test series – Will Young – has said that no one in the side even dreamt of a 3-0 win against India away from home.
New Zealand came to India on the back of a 0-2 defeat against Sri Lanka. However, they turned their fortunes around against Rohit Sharma’s team scripting their first series win against India away from home.
Young batted well throughout the series. The batter did not even have one single-digit score despite precarious conditions and always stepped up to stabilise the New Zealand batting-order. An elated Young spoke to Cricbuzz about the mood in the camp and said that it was an incredible feeling to beat Indian at their own backyard.
“Having won the series 3-0 is something that none of us even dreamed of, to be honest. It’s just…it’s just incredible!” Will Young told Cricbuzz after the series.
“I remember in Pune, we obviously had the hour [long] bus journey back to the hotel, so we had the speaker going with the songs and everyone was singing along, which was fun,” Young said.
“It did feel funny because there were some incredible performances from both teams throughout the series. Hundreds scored on both sides, big wicket bags and some superstar names,” he further added.
Asked about the player of the series award which he got ahead of Ajaz Patel, Mitchell Santner and Rachin Ravindra, Young said that the officials awarded consistency above all.
“I guess it was just an award that awarded consistency, really,” he said.
“I went out and in each innings I tried to grab back some momentum, especially batting at three. If you lose the first wicket and you lose a couple, you can be in real trouble. So, I just tried to go out there and even if sometimes it was just small partnerships of 30 or 40, it meant that the boys could just take a breather and not lose those wickets and clumps and build in innings and build a partnership. I managed to do that each time I went out to bat,” Young concluded on the matter.
New Zealand have come from behind to become one of the contenders for the World Test Championship final’s spots. The inaugural edition champions would hope to drub England at home in the 3-match series and give themselves the best chance to reach their second final in the competition.
