Mumbai Indians owner Nita Ambani hopes WPL will inspire young girls across country to take up sports

Mumbai Indians owner Nita Ambani said that her franchise is “known to play a certain kind of cricket” after it defeated Gujarat Giants in the curtain-raiser of the Women’s Premier League.

Mumbai Indians secured a massive 143-run victory over Gujarat Giants at the D.Y.Patil Stadium on March 4. Ambani, who bought the rights to form a team in the WPL for a whooping INR 912.99 crores, said that Mumbai Indians play a fearless and exciting brand of cricket.

Harmanpreet Kaur smashed 65 off 30 and Amelia Kerr hit a 24-ball 45 not out to power Mumbai Indians to an imposing total of 207/5. In reply, Gujarat Giants skipper Beth Mooney hobbled off the field with a leg injury in the first over before the team was bundled out for just 64.

Saika Ishaque took four wickets, while Nat Sciver-Brunt and Amelia Kerr shared four wickets and Issy Wong bagged the crucial wicket of Ash Gardner, which virtually led to the collapse of the Giants.

“Mumbai Indians is known to play a certain kind of cricket – fearless and exciting, and our girls have performed so well. I am proud how they played, it was all-round. Special mention about our captain Harman, what a special innings she played today 65 in 30 balls. Also I felt Amelia Kerr was fabulous – she batted well, bowled well,” said Ambani after the match.

Ambani further said she is hopeful that the WPL will inspire young girls to take up the sport.

“I think it is such an iconic day and iconic moment for women in sport. It is so thrilling to be part of this wonderful tournament WPL. I hope this inspires many young girls across the country to take up sports, realise their dreams and follow their hearts,” said Ambani.
