A huge mob, comprising 100 African nationals, surrounded a police team in the Neb Sarai area of South Delhi and clashed with them when the cops apprehended three Nigerians.
The Nigerians, whose visas were expired, were being brought to police station when the mob gathered the police team and obstructed them. They managed to free Nigerian nationals who had been detained over visa expiration by the anti-drugs force.
A team of Narcotics cell, including senior police officials, had gone to Raju Park in Neb Sarai for deportation proceedings for overstaying foreign nationals, police said in a statement. At about 2:30pm, the team apprehended three African nationals whose visas had expired.
“At the same time, a mob of over 100 people of African origin surrounded them, and obstructed the police operation. Two of the three detained managed to successfully escape during the chaos, but the police managed to catch one of them, 22-year-old Philip, again,” DCP (South) Chandan Chowdhary said.
Again at 6.30 pm, again a joint team from the Neb Sarai Police Station and the Narcotics Squad visited Raju Park and detained four African nationals, including a woman. 150 to 200 people of African origin surrounded the police team again, and tried to help the detainees escape. But the police somehow managed to control the crowd and brought them to Neb Sarai Police Station. Their deportation proceedings are underway, police said.
The four nationals have been identified as Kene Chukwu David Williams, Igwe Emmanuel Chimezie, Aziegbe John and Queen Godwin.
