Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) delivered the final Scorpene-class submarine, Vaghsheer, to the Indian Navy on Thursday, completing Project 75.

The acceptance documents were signed by Sanjeev Singhal, the Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of MDL, and Rear Admiral R Adhisrinivasan, the Chief Staff Officer (Technical), in the presence of senior officials from both MDL and the Navy.

This marks the completion of Project 75, a key initiative in India’s defence indigenisation efforts. Under the project, MDL constructed six Scorpene-class submarines with assistance from France’s Naval Group.

“The delivery of Vaghsheer is a significant milestone in MDL’s capabilities,” said Singhal. “This project strengthens the Indian Navy’s operational readiness and supports the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative,” he added.

Vaghsheer features advanced weapon systems and enhanced operational capabilities, adding to India’s underwater combat strength. Its induction into the Navy follows the successful completion of MDL’s contractual commitments under Project 75, marking the shipyard as the only one in India with the proven capability to build advanced conventional submarines.

“This delivery reaffirms MDL’s position as a leader in defence manufacturing,” said Rear Admiral Adhisrinivasan. “It is a step forward in strengthening India’s maritime security,” he added.
