The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday arrested a man from Manipur for his alleged involvement in a conspiracy to exploit the current ethnic unrest in the state against the Indian government.

The man, Seiminlun Gangte, was arrested in Churachandpur district. According to the NIA, terror organisations based in Myanmar and Bangladesh are allegedly behind the conspiracy, who want to wage war against the Indian government by exploiting the ethnic unrest in Manipur.

The NIA investigation revealed that these outside militant groups had entered into a conspiracy with a section of militant leaders in India to provoke violence with the intention of driving a wedge between different ethnic groups in Manipur.

For this purpose, these outside groups were providing funds to procure arms, ammunition and other types of terrorist hardware. These materials were being sourced both from across the border as well as from other terrorist outfits active in the Northeast.

The accused has been brought to New Delhi after his arrest and will be produced before a jurisdictional court.

Further investigations in the case are in progress.
