Kolkata rape-murder: Autopsy says victim was throttled, then smothered to death

The death of the post-graduate trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 has sent shockwaves across the nation.

The post-mortem report that revealed grim details of the case was handed over to the victim’s family on Monday. The autopsy report confirmed that the victim was sexually assaulted, and then she was killed by throttling and smothering. The report pointed out that there was evidence of rape, and it confirmed the victim was brutally raped.

The report suggested the death to be homicidal and ante-mortem, meaning she was dead before she was found. The report further mentioned the time of the death to be between 3 am and 5 am.

The four-page autopsy report revealed that the woman had bleeding from her private parts and there were injury marks on other parts of her body.

“There was bleeding from both her eyes and mouth, injuries on the face, and a nail. The victim was also bleeding from her private parts. She also has injuries in her belly, left leg, neck, in her right hand, ring finger, and lips,” the autopsy report was quoted by PTI in its report.

Meanwhile, one person, a civic volunteer, has been arrested on charges of rape and murder of the doctor. According to the police, after committing the crime, the accused returned to his residence, slept until late Friday morning and washed his clothes to destroy the evidence.

The incident shook the nation and sparked nationwide protests by doctors calling for justice for the victim and her family.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday gave a stern warning to the Kolkata police, stating that the investigation would be transferred to the CBI if the cops are unable to crack the matter by Sunday, August 18.
