In an overnight breakthrough in the alleged sexual assault and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor in Kolkata, police have arrested the main accused, Sanjay Roy, using a piece of critical evidence — a bluetooth headphone he had left behind at the crime scene.

The semi-nude body of a woman postgraduate trainee (PGT) doctor was found inside the seminar hall of the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Friday morning. The deceased, a second-year student of the chest medicine department, was on duty when she was allegedly raped and killed inside the hospital.

Her body was found lying on a blood-stained mattress. The preliminary autopsy report also mentioned that the woman doctor was sexually abused and had bled from both eyes and mouth.

Soon after the incident was reported by hospital authorities, Kolkata Police arrived at the scene to investigate the matter. Cops started scanning the CCTV cameras installed in the hospital and based on the footage, they compiled a list of potential suspects.

Among the evidence collected from the scene was a bluetooth headphone, sources told India Today TV.

Sanjay Roy, who appeared in the CCTV footage wandering suspiciously near the seminar hall where the murder occurred, was also seen leaving the hospital in the early hours of Friday morning.

Later, police summoned all the suspects to the hospital for further questioning. During the interrogation, officers seized the mobile phones of all the suspects.

After the questioning, one of the officials attempted to pair the seized bluetooth headphone with every suspect’s mobile phone and to everyone’s shock, Sanjay Roy’s phone automatically connected to the device, prompting his immediate arrest, sources said.

When confronted by the police team, Sanjay broke down and confessed to committing the crime. Police officers also claimed that initially Sanjay gave different statements during the questioning.

“Now, we are trying to find out who else was with him or he had someone else with him,” an official told news agency PTI, adding that police might conduct necessary medical examinations on him.

Meanwhile, sources told India Today TV that Sanjay Roy is a civic police volunteer by profession. A civic police volunteer is deputed to assist lower-ranked police officers who were admitted to hospitals, offering support and assistance as needed.

The incident has sparked a massive outrage amongst the medical fraternity with scores of junior doctors at various hospitals in West Bengal holding protest sit-ins and taking out processions, demanding exemplary punishment for those involved in the case.

Junior doctors, including interns, housestaff and postgraduate trainees held protest sit-ins and processions at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, National Medical College and Hospital and Medical College in Kolkata. Similar protests were held in other districts of the state too.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asserted that her government will seek death penalty for the accused. Banerjee also said she has asked officials to ensure that the case be tried in a fast track court.
