Kerala Health Minister Veena George on Wednesday directed the Women and Child Development department to conduct a probe into the suicide of a woman PG Doctor.
Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and submit a report. It is alleged that the 26-year-old doctor died by suicide due to dowry demands.
Shahana, a PG student in the surgery department at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, was found dead at her rented apartment near the institute on Tuesday morning. Her relatives alleged that she died by suicide after her male friend, who is also a PG doctor, withdrew from the marriage proposal.
His family allegedly demanded a significant dowry in the form of gold, land, and a BMW car. Shahana’s family was unable to fulfil these demands. Subsequently, the male doctor, who was also a representative of the Medical PG Doctors Association, ended the relationship.
The victim’s father, who was working in the Middle East, died recently.
The Medical College police have registered a case of unnatural death.
Kerala Women’s Commission Chairperson Advocate Sathidevi, who visited Shahana’s mother at her house, demanded a proper investigation into this issue. The Women’s Commission will seek a report from the police.
If the boy’s family demanded dowry, a case will be registered against them under the Prevention of Dowry Act, Sathidevi said. The state Minority Commission also initiated a case on its own based on media reports in this regard.
Meanwhile, the Medical PG Doctors Association has removed the accused doctor from all responsibilities within their organisation.
