James Cameron’s Avatar re-release garners Rs 244 crore at global box office

Ahead of Avatar: Way of Water’s release worldwide, the makers re-released the first installment of the movie globally.

Avatar returned to theatres on September 23, in 4K HDR. Directed and written by James Cameron, the film was a huge success. Avatar was first released in 2009 and was one of the highest-grossing films of all time. The re-release also opened to promising results. It garnered almost Rs 244 crore at the global box office collection.

Avatargenerated $10 million in North America and $20.5 million internationally over the weekend — a huge turnout for movie that opened more than a decade ago, even if that movie happens to be the highest-grossing global release in history, reports Variety. With this weekend’s returns, Avatar widens its lead as the biggest movie of all time with $2.85 billion worldwide.

Avatar: Way of Water will focus on the main protagonists of the franchise, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana who play Jake Sully and Na’vi Neytiri in the film. The sequel is more centered around inter-personal relationships and is about protecting families. The key cast members for the sequel include Kate Winslet, Vin Diesel, Sigourney Weaver, and more. The re-release of Avatar is available in English in India.
