The Punjab Police has invoked terrorism charges against Amritpal Singh, the Khalistani separatist who won the Lok Sabha elections from jail, in a high-profile murder case.

Singh, the MP from Khadoor Sahib and leader of the pro-Khalistan organisation Waris Punjab De, is an accused in the murder of Gurpreet Singh, a close associate of the late actor Deep Sidhu. Senior police officers did not elaborate on the MP’s specific role in the October 2024 murder but confirmed the invocation of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in the case.

Gurpreet Singh, a YouTuber who had also been involved in the formation of Waris Punjab De, was killed on October 9, 2024, in the village of Harino. He was shot while returning home from a gurudwara on his two-wheeler.

Nearly a dozen people have been accused, and the police have so far made several arrests, including two shooters, three individuals who assisted with reconnaissance, and an accomplice who helped facilitate the crime. All arrested suspects are in judicial custody, except Arsh Dalla, a gangster believed to be abroad.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Punjab Police has named Amritpal Singh and Arsh Dalla after gathering substantial evidence during the investigation, according to officials. The police have also indicated that the evidence points to Amritpal’s involvement in orchestrating the conspiracy to murder Gurpreet Singh, based on statements recorded during the probe.

Talking to India Today TV, Faridkot Senior Superintendent of Police Pragya Jain confirmed the arrests and said that the UAPA had now been applied to the case.

“This case dates back to October last year. All accused, including the shooters, have been arrested, except for the handler, Arsh Dalla, who is abroad,” she said.

Amritpal Singh, who is currently imprisoned in Nabha Jail in Patiala under the National Security Act (NSA), faces mounting legal challenges. He took oath as the Lok Sabha MP on July 5, 2025 on

The move to invoke the UAPA comes ahead of a major political rally planned by his supporters at the Maghi Mela in Sri Muktsar Sahib on January 14, where they are expected to announce the formation of a new political party. Additionally, a critical court hearing regarding the NSA charges against Amritpal Singh is scheduled for January 15.
