Long weekends are always a welcome break, whether for office-goers or stock market traders. For traders and investors, weekends are usually a brief pause in the market action, just two days to regroup before the Monday bell.
But this time, it’s a longer-than-usual break. With the stock market closed today for Eid-ul-Fitr, investors get an extended weekend, giving them an extra day to reassess their portfolios before trading resumes.
The stock market is closed on Monday, March 31, on account of Eid-ul-Fitr. As per the holiday schedules of both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), there will be no trading across equity, derivatives, currency, securities lending and borrowing (SLB), and electronic gold receipts (EGR) segments.
STOCK MARKET HOLIDAY FOR EID
Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the most significant Islamic festivals, is observed based on the sighting of the crescent moon.
Unlike festivals with fixed dates, the timing of Eid celebrations can vary. This year, there was uncertainty regarding whether Eid would be celebrated on March 31 or April 1. However, the crescent moon was sighted on Sunday evening, confirming March 31 as the festival day in India.
Despite the late announcement of the festival date, the stock market holiday follows a fixed schedule. Both the BSE and NSE had already listed March 31 as a trading holiday in their official calendars.
Apart from the stock market, the currency derivatives segment is also shut today. Investors should note that markets were already closed over the weekend (March 29-30), meaning that regular trading will resume on Tuesday, April 1.
STOCK MARKET WORKING HOURS AND UPCOMING HOLIDAYS
The stock market follows a five-day workweek, operating from Monday to Friday. Regular trading hours are from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm. Markets remain closed on weekends and designated public holidays as per the official schedule.
There are 14 scheduled market holidays in 2025. In April alone, there will be three more holidays:
Shri Mahavir Jayanti – April 10
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti – April 14
Good Friday – April 18
Other major market holidays in 2025 include Maharashtra Day (May 1), Independence Day (August 15), Ganesh Chaturthi (August 27), Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), and Dussehra (October 2).
In the final quarter of 2025, markets will be closed for Diwali celebrations (October 21-22), Prakash Gurpurb (November 5), and Christmas (December 25).
