From Virat Kohli to Rohit Sharma: A look at India’s centurions in World Cup against Bangladesh

India and Bangladesh have faced each other four times in World Cups since their first meeting back in 2007 at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

The Tigers did win their first game after Mashrafe Mortaza, a young Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim guided them to a memorable win. But since then, India have beaten their opponents three times, in 2011, 2015 and 2019.

Bangladesh haven’t had a centurion for them in World Cup matches against India. Tamim Iqbal holds the record for the highest individual score after he notched 70 back in 2011 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

But India have had three batters, who have racked up hundreds. Let’s recap the World Cup centuries for the Men in Blue against the Tigers in World Cups

Virender Sehwag (2011)
Back in 2011, Virender Sehwag started India’s campaign in the best possible manner. The boundary he hit off Shafiul Islam in the very first ball of the match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur set the tone for India in their journey.

Sehwag went on to rack up the highest individual score in ODIs between the two teams, a record that was broken only last year by Ishan Kishan. Sehwag scored 175 runs off 140 balls with 14 fours and five sixes.

On the back of his knock, India went on to hammer 370 runs for the loss of four wickets. Sehwag became the Player of the Match after India won the match by 70 runs.

Virat Kohli (2011)
Virat Kohli was already used to scoring hundreds for India when he stepped out to play for India by the time he stepped out to play on the biggest stage. In his very first World Cup match, Kohli made a record. The then youngster became the first Indian batter to score a hundred on his World Cup debut.

Kohli scored 100 runs off 83 balls with eight fours and two sixes. He also put on a massive 203-run partnership with Sehwag for the fourth wicket. No one would have imagined back then that Kohli would be rated among the greatest batters in India if not in the world.

Rohit Sharma (2015, 2019)
Rohit Sharma loves playing against Bangladesh when it comes to World Cups. With 241 runs from two matches, he averages a stunning 120.50. Back in 2015, Rohit scored 137 runs off 126 balls with 14 fours and three sixes in the quarterfinal at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Rohit also put on 122 runs for the fourth wicket along with Suresh Raina. Rohit went on to win the Player of the Match after the Men in Blue secured victory by 109 runs.

Then in 2019, Rohit also scored a hundred, but that time around, he had the rub of the green go his way. When he was batting on 10, Tamim Iqbal dropped a catch to give the Indian batter a lifeline.

Rohit went on to make the Tigers pay by scoring 104 runs off 92 balls at Edgbaston in Birmingham. He laid the platform for India with a partnership of 180 runs for the opening wicket with KL Rahul. India won the match by 28 runs.
