Rahul Gandhi’s legal team said the Congress leader faced “irreparable, irreversible loss” from his conviction in the criminal defamation case over his Modi surname remark.
A Surat court is hearing Gandhi’s plea for a stay on his conviction in the case. Rahul Gandhi was convicted and sentenced to two years in jail over his remark from 2019 when he said, “Why do all thieves have Modi in their names?” He made the remark while campaigning in Karnataka’s Kolar ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Judge Robin Mogera is hearing Rahul Gandhi’s plea while senior Advocate RS Cheema is representing the Congress leader. While presenting the case in court, RS Cheema said the matter “should be seen with two facts – irreplaceable loss and irreversible injury”.
