Depression likely to form over Bay of Bengal, may intensify into cyclonic storm: IMD

The India Meterological Department (IMD) in its latest weather bulletin said that a low pressure area formed over the south Andaman Sea is likely to concentrate into a depression over Southeast Bay of Bengal by Tuesday.

It will then gradually intensify into a cyclonic storm and reach near north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry by December 8. This is the second cyclone of the post monsoon season.

The low pressure area is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm and reach southwest Bay of Bengal near north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coast by December 8 morning, the weather office said.

“A low pressure area lies over south Andaman Sea and neighbourhood at 0830 hrs IST of today, the December 5 2022. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a Depression over Southeast Bay of Bengal by December 6 evening. Thereafter, it is likely to continue to move west-northwestwards, intensify further gradually into a Cyclonic Storm and reach Southwest Bay of Bengal near north Tamil Nadu Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts by December 8 morning, “the weather department said in a press release.

HEAVY RAINFALL WARNING ISSUED

In the wake of the following developments, the weather office has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Heavy rainfall spell over north Tamil Nadu, south Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema from December 7 to December 9, it said.

“Enhanced rainfall activity with rainfall at a few places with isolated heavy rainfall likely to commence over south Andhra Pradesh from 07th December mid-night. It is likely to increase with rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on 08th December and isolated heavy rainfall on 9th December over south Andhra Pradesh,” it added.

The weather office has projected that squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph are very likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Andaman Sea on December 5 and 6.

Sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough along and off Andaman sea, Southeast Bay of Bengal, Southwest and adjoining areas of Westcentral Bay of Bengal and high on December 8. Sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough along and off South Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Sri Lanka coasts on December 7 and 9 and high on December 8.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into Andaman Sea on December 5 and 6; southeast Bay of Bengal from December 5 to 7; southwest Bay of Bengal from December 6 to 9; Along and off the Sri Lanka coast from December 6 to 9; along and off Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and South Andhra Pradesh coast and Gulf of Mannar from December 7 to 9.

WESTERN DISTURBANCE TO AFFECT HIMALAYAS

A feeble Western Disturbance is likely to affect Western Himalayan Region from December 7 and under its influence, isolated light to moderate rainfall is likely over Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh on December 8.

No significant change in minimum temperatures is likely over northern parts of the country in the next 4-5 days. Dense fog is very likely in isolated pockets over Himachal Pradesh during morning hours of the next 3 days and over Punjab and Haryana during the next 24 hours.
