CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP Bikash Bhattacharya has moved the Calcutta High Court seeking suo motu contempt against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her comments made during a public event in Alipore.
Bhattacharya, who is also a senior advocate, prayed before a division bench that contempt proceedings be initiated against her for remarks on the dismissal of thousands of teaching and non-teaching staff in West Bengal.
During a programme at Alipore Court on Tuesday, Mamata Banerjee spoke on the dismissal of teaching and non-teaching staff in state government-sponsored and aided schools on the HC’s orders on petitions filed by candidates, who claimed to have been deprived of jobs owing to irregularities in the recruitment process.
“I will urge you, the high court to rethink. Even yesterday, two people died by suicide in Jalpaiguri. If someone else did something wrong, why should these people suffer? If someone loses their job suddenly, how will they look after their family? Give that person a chance,” she had said.
The high court, through different orders, had directed the dismissal of around 3,000 staffers as it held that serious irregularities were committed in the recruitment process.
