Embattled Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is likely to resign as the Liberal Party leader on Monday amid growing calls within the party to step aside, The Globe and Mail reported, citing sources.
The development comes as polls show that Trudeau’s Liberals will lose badly to the opposition Conservatives in the upcoming federal election slated to be held in October this year. It also comes less than a month after Chrystia Freeland quit as the country’s finance minister and deputy prime minister.
Sources told The Globe and Mail that Trudeau’s decision to quit could be expected before a key national caucus meeting on Wednesday. It is unclear whether Trudeau would resign immediately or stay on as the prime minister until a new leader was selected.
