Russia has accused the BBC of waging an information war on different fronts amid controversy over a two-part documentary on the Gujarat riots and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, “I would like to draw your attention to the fact that it is yet another evidence of BBC waging an information war on different fronts – not only against Russia, but also against other global centers of power pursuing an independent policy.”

“After a certain number of years, it turns out that BBC is fighting even within the British establishment, being an instrument of the interests of some groups against others. It should be treated accordingly,” Zakharova was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

The Russian support comes weeks after the Ministry of External Affairs banned the documentary in India.

The two-part documentary claims to have investigated certain aspects of the Gujarat riots during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure as chief minister.

The Centre recently directed social media platforms Twitter and YouTube to block links to the documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’. The Ministry of External Affairs has trashed the documentary as a “propaganda piece” that lacks objectivity and reflects a colonial mindset.
