Asian Games 2023 Day 10 Wrap: Parul Chaudhary, Annu Rani star as athletics dominate the show

The Indian contingent in athletics were the stars of the show as Parul Chaudhary and Annu Rani claimed gold medals in the 5000m women’s final and women’s Javelin on Tuesday, October 2.

The Indian cricket team entered the semi-finals while the women’s hockey team dominated Hong Kong China to make it to the final four.

Lovlina Borgohain made it to the semi-finals, while India got two more bronze in boxing as India’s tally reached a total of 69 medals. India had started the day with 60 medals to their name after winning 7 on October 2.

India’s long distance runner Parul Chaudhary clinched her second medal in the Asian Games 2023 on Tuesday, 3 October. Chaudhary put in an incredible performance to win gold in the women’s 5000m final in Hangzhou, China.

She ran in the fourth spot for the majority part of the 10-lap race. Chaudhary put in the effort with three laps to go, accelerating ahead of the group of athletes and matching the pace of Japan’s Ririka Hironaka who had been running first from the start.

Parul trailed Ririka till the final 50 meters of the race before putting in the after-burners. Ririka, who was losing her stamina in the final leg of the race expected a late move from Parul on the outside lane. Parul sold her the dummy and put in an incredible late acceleration to finish first in the race.

Annu Rani has made her country proud by clinching the gold medal in the women’s javelin throw event at the Asian Games 2023. This victory marks a significant milestone in her illustrious career, as she recorded a season-best throw of 62.92 meters to secure her first-ever gold medal at a major international event.

Rani had started off with a throw 56.99 m and then would take the lead in the second attempt with a 61.28 m. Nadeesha Dilhani Lekamge would take the lead in between with her fourth attempt to push Rani temporarily to the second spot.

However, the Indian would regain the lead with her season-best throw of 62.92 m, which was enough to help her win gold on the day. This was India’s sixth medal in athletics on Tuesday

Apart from these two, Praveen Chithravel edged past his compatriot Abdulla Aboobacker to win the bronze medal in the Men’s Triple Jump final on Tuesday.

Indian athletes Tejashwin Shankar and Mohammed Afsal delivered stunning performances in the Asian Games, clinching silver medals in the men’s decathlon and 800m sprint respectively.

Vithya Ramraj secured the bronze medal in women’s 400 m hurdles with a spectacular performance.

Lovlina secures Olympics spot

Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain advanced to the final of the women’s 75kg boxing event at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China. Lovlina Borgohain also secured an Olympic quota for Paris 2024 by reaching the final of her division.

Lovlina Borgohain, an Olympic medalist and world champion, defeated Thailand’s Baison Maneekon with a unanimous decision in the semi-finals to secure her place in the gold medal match on Wednesday.

India’s Preeti Pawar, on Tuesday, October 3, won the bronze medal in the women’s 54kg category in boxing in the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou. She lost to China’s Yuan Chang 0-5 on points in the semi-final at the Hangzhou Gymnasium.

Narender also won the Bronze medal in the men’s +92 kg category on Tuesday.

India assured of three medals in squash

India had a strong showing in Squash on October 3 at the Asian Games 2023 as Saurav Ghosal and the mixed doubles pairs of Dipika Pallikal-Harindar Pal Singh Sandhu and Anahat Singh-Abhay Singh made it to the semifinals to ensure three medals in the discipline.

Ghosal faced off against Japan’s Ryunosuke Tsukue in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, and defeated him in straight games with a scoreline of 3-0.

Pallikal and Sandhu secured their passage into the semi-finals after securing a comeback win over the Phillipines’ Jemyca Aribado and Robert Andrew Garcia.

Following in the footsteps of their teammates, Anahat and Abhay Singh won their mixed doubles quarterfinal against Korea’s Yeonsoo Yang and Dongjun Lee. The Indian duo won the first game 11-4 before dropping the second one.

However, they were completely dominant in the final game and won it 11-1 to progress to the semi-finals and assure India of another medal.

Indian cricket team secure semi-final spot

India advanced to the semi-final of men’s cricket in the Asian Games 2023 after beating Nepal by 23 runs in the quarter-finals at the Pingfeng Campus Cricket Field in Hangzhou.

After being put in to bat first, India scored 202 for the loss of four wickets on the back of Yashasvi Jaiswal’s brilliant hundred.

Women’s hockey team rout Hong Kong China

Indian strikers Vandana Katariya, vice-captain Deep Grace Ekka, and Deepika scored a hat-trick each, leading India to a 13-0 victory over Hong Kong in the women’s hockey competition at the Asian Games. This triumph in their last pool match propelled the team into the semifinals.

Gold and 2 silvers assured in Archery

India have been assured of one gold and two silver medals in Archery at the Asian Games 2023 as both Abhishek Verma and Ojas Deotale qualified for the men’s compound individual final. The Indian duo will now compete against each other and thus assure India’s first and second finish on the podium.

The second silver was assured when Jyothi Surekha Vennam defeated compatriot Aditi Swami to reach the women’s compound individual final at the Asian Games 2023. The semi-final match between the two saw Vennam securing a victory over Swami with a score of 149-146.

Arjun and Sunil secure India’s second medal in canoeing

The Indian duo of Arjun Singh and Sunil Singh Salam secured the bronze medal in the men’s canoe double 1000m final at the 2023 Asian Games, with a time of 3:53.329.

This was India’s second Asian Games medal in canoeing, following a bronze medal by Johnny Rommel and Siji Kumar Sadanandan in the same event in Hiroshima in 1994.

India start Kabaddi gold quest with thumping win

The Indian men’s kabaddi team began its quest for the Asian Games 2023 title with a clinical 55-18 win over Bangladesh at the Xiaoshan Guali Sports Centre in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China. With a track record of being seven-time champions, these Indian kabaddi players are seeking to recapture the Asian Games gold medal after slipping to bronze at the 2018 edition.
