The mother of Anjali Singh, the 20-year-old Delhi woman who died after she was hit and dragged by a car, has strongly refuted the claims of her friend that her daughter was drunk at the time of the incident.
“My daughter never consumed alcohol. She never came home drunk. Nidhi is lying,” said Rekha Devi, mother of Anjali.
She said she had never seen Nidhi with her daughter, nor had the woman visited their home. She further accused Nidhi of being part of a conspiracy.
“I never seen or heard of Nidhi. She never visited our home. If she was my daughter’s friend, how could she leave her and run away? This is a well thought out conspiracy. Nidhi may also be involved in this. This should be thoroughly investigated,” she said.
Nidhi, a friend of Anjali’s who was with her on the fateful night, said that Anjali was drunk and not in her senses on that night. Following Nidhi’s claim, Anjali’s family released a statement claiming that her autopsy report showed no signs of her having alcohol on the night of the horrific accident.
Anjali’s maternal uncle, Prem, also cast doubt over the veracity of statements made by Nidhi to the media. He condemned Anjali’s friend for fleeing the scene of the accident and not reporting the matter to the police right away.
“My niece didn’t have a drinking habit. If she was drunk that night (when the incident happened) as per Nidhi’s claim then the postmortem report would have mentioned that. It means Nidhi is lying,” he charged.
He also said the Delhi Police should hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and called that the accused be tried on murder charges while a case should be lodged against Nidhi under IPC section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).
“When the incident happened, didn’t she have the humanity to report it to police or (victim’s) family? She was scared then. Isn’t she scared now? This was Nidhi’s conspiracy,” alleged Prem.
DELHI CAR HORROR
Anjali was killed on Sunday after she was dragged for around 12 kilometres from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala after the scooter she was riding collided with a car. Five men who were in the car have been arrested by the Delhi Police. The five accused have been charged with culpable homicide.
At the time of the accident, Nidhi was riding pillion on the two-wheeler which Anjali was driving. She fled from the site after sustaining minor injuries. When asked why she did not tell the police, Nidhi said that she was scared and she went back home.
