A statue of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar installed in a village in Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari district was desecrated by some unknown persons, police said.

Soon after the incident sparked widespread outrage and condemnation, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu ordered a thorough investigation into the vandalism that took place in Nallajerla village.

Andhra Pradesh’s top cop Harish Kumar Gupta briefed Chief Minister Naidu on the incident while providing a detailed report. Director General of Police (DGP) Gupta assured the Chief Minister that a special police team had been formed to investigate the matter and arrest those responsible.

He said that the incident appears to be a deliberate attempt to create communal tensions and that the perpetrators will face severe consequences. DGP Gupta also warned that any attempts to disrupt peace and harmony in the state will be dealt with firmly.
