The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday arrested Dr Sandip Ghosh.

The former principal of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and a police officer for the delay in filing the FIR and missing evidence in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor. The cop arrested along with Ghosh is Station House Officer (SHO) of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal.

Notably, Ghosh was earlier arrested by the CBI in a separate case related to alleged financial irregularities in the RG Kar hospital and underwent a polygraph test.

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and immediate suspension of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal over Mondal’s arrest.

“The arrest of Abhijit Mondal; Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tala Police Station (PS), has established that the Police were directly involved in tampering evidence and acted as a stimulant to create lacuna in order to derail the investigation into the Rape and Murder of the RG Kar PGT Lady Doctor. The procedural lapses were well orchestrated and closely monitored by the top officials of @KolkataPolice,” Adhikari wrote on X.

“@CPKolkata Vineet Goyal should be suspended immediately and Home Minister Mamata Banerjee must resign as she doesn’t have any moral authority left to continue as the head of the Home Dept,” he added.

The Calcutta High Court had given the CBI a three-week deadline to submit a progress report on their ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar hospital last month. The report is expected to be presented before the court on September 17.

The body of the 31-year-old trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. Autopsy reports suggested she was brutally raped before being murdered.

A day later, Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, who admitted to raping and murdering the doctor.
