After giving actor Vicky Kaushal his biggest opener, “Bad Newz” swiftly entered its first Saturday and added a decent figure to its box office collection.

The romantic-comedy began its run at the ticket counters by earning Rs 8.3 crore on Friday, July 19. On its first Saturday, July 20, the film witnessed over 16 per cent growth.

As per industry tracker Sacnilk, Bad Newz earned Rs 9.75 crore (early estimates) on Saturday, bringing its total box office collection to Rs 18.05 crore within two days. The overall Hindi occupancy of the film was 26.81 per cent, with maximum footfall coming from the night shows.

Bad Newz is expected to continue its upward trajectory even on Sunday to end its first weekend with an impressive total. The film will face its real test on Monday.

Commenting on the film’s strong start at the box office, film trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “A strong start was on the cards thanks to the impactful trailer + hugely popular song [#TaubaTauba], but the best part is, the strong start, coupled with positive feedback, has set the stage for a solid weekend total.”

As per Adarsh, the first weekend total of Bad Newz would be over Rs 30 crore. He stated, “#BadNewz has performed very well at major centres, while mass pockets saw ordinary to dull response… The strong performance at major centres is expected to drive growth on Sat and Sun… In all likelihood, #BadNewz should collect approx ₹33 [+/-] in its *opening weekend*, which is an excellent score.”

The box office performance of Bad Newz is being compared to this year’s other mid-budget releases, Kareena Kapoor’s Crew and Shahid Kapoor’s Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (TBMAUJ), both of which targeted the city audience. While Crew began its run at the theatres with Rs 10.28 crore and ended up earning Rs 32.60 crore over its first weekend, TBMAUJ collected Rs 7.02 crore on the first Friday and earned Rs 26.52 crore over the weekend.

For now, Bad Newz is even performing better than 2024’s surprise hit, horror-comedy Munjya.

Munjya earned Rs 4.21 crore on its first Friday, and by the end of its first weekend, it had earned Rs 20.04 crore. Bad Newz has already collected Rs 18.05 crore within two days.

The film, directed by Anand Tiwari, also stars Ammy Virk, Triptii Dimri, and Sheeba Chadha.
