WI vs AFG: West Indies script history with highest powerplay score in T20 World Cup
West Indies made the record for the highest powerplay score in the history of the T20 World Cup.
The Caribbean team achieved the feat when they scored 92 in the first 6 overs against Afghanistan in a Group C match on Tuesday, June 18 at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia. They broke the record earlier held by the Netherlands, who scored 91 runs against Ireland back in 2014 at the Sylhet International Stadium in Bangladesh.
England hold the third spot in the list of powerplay scores after they hammered 89 runs against South Africa back in 2016 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In the same match, the Proteas also raced their way to scoring 83 runs. India also feature in the list after plundering 83 runs against Scotland back in 2021 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Pooran, Charles help West Indies make history
After opting to bat first, West Indies made their intent clear by going for big shots. Brandon King, however, could not get going as he departed after scoring 7 runs off 6 balls. Azmatullah Omarzai accounted for his wicket in the second over. From there on, Nicholas Pooran and Johnson Charles played their shots to put the Caribbean team in a position of command.
The duo put on 80 runs for the second wicket off 37 balls. Naveen-ul-Haq separated them after getting rid of Charles, who scored 43 runs off 27 deliveries with the help of 8 fours. They were severe on Omarzai, who leaked 41 runs in his first 2 overs of the match.
