Kiran Rao directorial Laapataa Ladies has outperformed Sandeep Reddy Vanga film Animal on Netflix.

According to reports, Laapataa Ladies garnered a record 13.8 million views on Netflix after it debuted on the OTT platform only a month ago. Meanwhile, Ranbir Kapoor’s blockbuster Animal has garnered 13.6 million views till date.

Animal had released in cinemas on December 1 last year, and it was released on Netflix on January 26. Kiran Rao reacted to the happy news on her Instagram story with disbelief as she shared multiple emojis indicating the same.

An interesting thing to note here is that while Laapataa Ladies garnered those views in mere 30 days, Animal got its views in around four months.

Directed by Kiran Rao, Laapataa Ladies has been adapted from Biplab Goswami’s acclaimed novel. Apart from Ravi Kishan, the film also stars Sparsh Shrivastava, Pratibha Ranta and Nitanshi Goel.

Meanwhile, Animal, which released last December, had faced some backlash for its controversial take on gender roles. However, the criticism didn’t deter the movie from laughing its way to the bank, garnering a whopping Rs 918 crore at the global box office.

Earlier, Kiran Rao and Sandeep Reddy Vanga were engaged in a back and forth regarding misogyny in movies. Later, Kiran Rao told the Quint that she never specifically pointed out Vanga’s movies: “I haven’t commented on Mr Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s films because I have not seen them.

I have often spoken on misogyny and the representation of women on screen, and I have talked about it on various platforms and at various times. But I have never taken the name of any film because it is not really about the specific films, it is about the issues.”
