The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has said that the Uniform Civil Code law proposed by the Uttarakhand government is unnecessary, inappropriate, anti-diverse and unworkable:

The Bill introduced by Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami was passed by the state assembly on Wednesday. This also makes Uttarakhand the first state in the country to implement the Uniform Civil Code.

It will now be sent for President, Droupadi Murmu’s approval, after which it will be implemented in the state.

The Uniform Civil Code was one of the top promises in the manifesto of the BJP government ahead of the state assembly elections in 2022.

It seeks to replace the old personal laws that govern marriage, divorce, succession and live-in relationships.
