Karnataka Covid situation in control, mask must for elders: Siddaramaiah
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday conducted a high-level meeting to review the coronavirus JN.1 sub-variant situation in the state.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister emphasised the importance of ensuring an ample supply of essential medical resources, such as oxygen, beds, ventilators, and medicine.
Speaking to reporters about JN.1, Siddaramaiah clarified that the sub-variant is not considered dangerous and the situation is under control.
As of now, Karnataka has reported 34 active cases of JN.1, with 20 infected being reported in Bengaluru.
The Chief Minister said that Covid testing in Karnataka has been intensified, reaching up to 5,000 tests per day, including 1,000 tests in Bengaluru. He also said that a Cabinet Sub-Committee will be formed, which will collaborate closely with the Advisory Committee to monitor the Covid situation in the state continuously.
Additionally, Siddaramaiah emphasised the need to increase testing in border districts. Despite surge in Covid cases, the Chief Minister urged the public not to panic but to exercise caution.
During the meeting, CM asked authorities to ensure the use of masks for individuals above 60 years, both indoors and outdoors. While masks are not currently mandatory for those below 60, the CM advised the public to wear masks outdoors.
Siddaramaiah reassured that dedicated hospitals across all districts would be well-equipped with oxygen, beds, ventilators, and other necessary facilities.
He also asked authorities to make vaccinations available, adding that the state has sufficient funds to tackle any untoward situation.
Earlier in the day, Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said that there will be no imposition of any restrictions as of now, while stressing the need for people to remain cautious or take precautions.
“As we increase COVID tests, cases will increase. Our TAC has met yesterday and has held discussions, the cabinet sub-committee which is meeting tomorrow will look into their suggestions or recommendations and decide on what further measures need to be taken,” Rao said.
Karnataka on Sunday reported 106 fresh cases of COVID infections, taking the total number of active cases in the state to 344. Bengaluru alone reported 95 fresh cases.
