Sri Lanka 55-all out, South Africa 83-all out: Ruthless India equal unique World Cup record
India scripted history by becoming just the second team to bowl two opponents out for under 100 runs in an ODI World Cup.
India achieved the feat during their 243-run win against South Africa in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. India became the second team after the Sri Lankan side from the 2007 edition to reach this milestone. The Men in Blue first bowled out Sri Lanka for 55 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, before bundling South Africa for 83 runs at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Following these wins, India cemented their place at the top of the World Cup 2023 points table, having won all their eight matches in the tournament. Rohit Sharma’s men have now amassed 16 points from eigth matches with a net run-rate of +2.456.
INDIA DOMINATE SRI LANKA
After posting 357 for 8 in the first innings, India came out all guns blazing at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to bowl Sri Lanka out for just 55 runs.
In the first innings, India put up 357 for 8 on the scoreboard on the back of brilliant half-centuries from Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. Gill scored 92 runs off as many balls, hitting 11 boundaries and two sixes. Kohli hit 88 runs off 94 deliveries, getting 11 boundaries on the way. Meanwhile, Iyer smashed 82 runs off 56 balls, hitting three boundaries and six maximums.
In the second innings, Mohammed Shami claimed his third five-wicket haul in ODI World Cups as Sri Lanka crumbled in their 358-run chase. Mohammed Siraj picked up three wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with a wicket each as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 55 runs in just 19.4 overs.
INDIA HUMBLE SOUTH AFRICA
Birthday boy Virat Kohli scored his 49th ODI century to go level with the legendary Sachin Tendulkar in terms of most centuries scored in the 50-over format. His century was aided by a brilliant fifty from Shreyas Iyer and quick-fire knocks from Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja to help India post 326 for 6 in 50 overs.
Chasing 327 runs, South Africa struggled to get going with the bat in Kolkata. Ravindra Jadeja was the destroyer-in-chief, claiming five wickets while giving away just 33 runs in nine overs against South Africa, becoming just the second Indian spinner to take a five-wicket haul in ODI World Cups.
India bowled out the Proteas for just 83 runs, handing them their biggest loss in ODIs in terms of runs.
Following their massive win against South Africa, the Men in Blue will take on the Netherlands in Bengaluru on November 11.
