Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will pay a visit to violence-hit Manipur from June 29 to 30, said the party’s general secretary KC Venugopal on Tuesday.

Gandhi will visit the relief camps set up in the state and interact with the civil society representatives in Imphal and Churachandpur during his visit, added Venugopal.

Manipur has been in a state of turmoil since May 3, when clashes broke out between the Meitei and Kuki communities following a protest march by the All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM). Ever since then, the violence in the hill-state has claimed more than 100 lives.

The Congress party has been hitting out at Prime Minister Natrendra Modi over his “silence” even as the situation in the border state continues to remain tense.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh had alleged that while the northeastern state is “burning”, PM Modi is “silent”, Home Minister Amit Shah is “ineffective” and Chief Minister N Biren Singh is “non-functional”. He also demanded CM Biren Singh’s resignation and said, “Every single minute Biren Singh continues as CM is a minute wasted towards efforts to bring peace and begin the reconciliation process in Manipur.”

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge also said the first thing PM Modi should do if he is really worried about the state is to sack Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
