South Korea on Wednesday issued an evacuation and air raid warning on national television for the island of Ulleungdo off its east coast after after North Korea fired an “unidentified ballistic missile”.

The air raid warning told residents on Ulleungdo to “evacuate to the nearest underground shelter”.

“North Korea fires an unidentified ballistic missile toward the East Sea,” the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement, referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan.

The missile headed towards the island before landing in the high sea, according to Yonhap News, which cited defence officials. The test follows Pyongyang’s warnings over large-scale joint air drills conducted by South Korea and the US.
