Union home minister Amit Shah, during his debate in the Rajya Sabha on the 75th anniversary of the Constitution on Tuesday.

Attacked the Congress for blaming the electronic voting machines (EVM) for their electoral debacle. “After they lose, they roam around with EVMs. They say the EVMs defeated them…When they lose they blame the EVMs. Two assembly election results came out on the same day.

Maharashtra ne opposition ka soopda saaf kar diya (bowled them out)…for disrespecting the mandate. So the EVMs are faulty in Maharashtra, but when they won in Jharkhand, they wore new clothes and rushed to take the oath. People are watching, you must be ashamed,” said Shah.

He further said, “How is it possible that EVM is working fine at one place and not at the other?”

Shah said the Election Commission of India (ECI) had asked people to check if it was possible to hack the EVMs for three days, but nobody turned up. The Supreme Court rejected the petitions on EVMs 24 times, he said.

Shah also compared the top four amendments of the Constitution brought about by the Congress and by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “During 55 years of rule, the Congress made 77 amendments,” said Shah, listing their amendments to extend the Lok Sabha and assembly terms, curtail the freedom of speech, take the PM post outside of judicial purview and Emergency.

“We amended the Constitution 22 times in 16 years,” said Shah. “But the BJP brought in amendments to uplift backward classes, introduce GST, abrogate Article 370 and end triple talaq,” Shah said.

The Lok Sabha on Friday initiated a two-day debate on ‘Discussion on the Glorious Journey of 75 Years of the Constitution of India’ to commemorate the beginning of the 75th year of its adoption.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a detailed speech in the Lok Sabha on Saturday listing the steps taken by the BJP to uphold the values of the Constitution and step-by-step examples of how the Congress hurt it over the years.

“One family of the Congress has crushed the Constitution. I mention one family because out of 75 years, only one family was ruling for 55 years. The family’s bad thoughts and policy were carried forward,” said Modi.
