Chaudhry Zubair Ahmad, son of former five-time Congress MLA Mateen Ahmed, and his wife, Shagufta Choudhry, a Congress Councillor, have joined the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections likely to take place in February 2025.
Ahead of their induction into the party, Choudhry Zubair and Shagufta Choudhry met with AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal. Expressing the motivation behind her decision, Shagufta Choudhary stated that she joined AAP to promote peace and harmony in her constituency, which she feels has been affected by communal tensions.
Chaudhry Zubair Ahmad joined AAP hours after resigning from the Congress citing “personal reasons”.
“This is to inform all of you that i am hereby resigning from the post of DISTRICT PRESIDENT, BABARPUR CONGRESS COMMITTEE along with the Primary Membership of the Congress Party due to some personal reasons. I thank the party leadership for the opportunity and responsibility,” Zubair’s resignation letter read.
Chaudhary Mateen Ahmed served as an MLA from the Seelampur constituency from 1993 to 2015. Speculations suggest that his son, Chaudhary Zubair Ahmed, may be fielded as the Aam Aadmi Party’s candidate from Seelampur in the upcoming Assembly elections.
AAP won the Seelampur Assembly seat in both the 2015 and 2020 elections, with Mohammad Ishraq winning in 2015 and Abdul Rehman in 2020. From 1993 to 2013, Chaudhary Mateen Ahmed contested elections from Seelampur under various banners, including Janata Dal, as an independent candidate, and later with the Congress. He won all these elections.
