Smerch missile hits target, passes trial at Pokhran

Jun 12, 2018

The upgraded version of Smerch guided missile-cum-multi battle rocket launcher passed the trial successfully when it hit the target around 90km away at the Pokhran field firing range.

A Indian-Russian joint venture the two latest versions of system 9MMF and 9.55K were launched and the trial was completed successfully with the missiles hitting the target around 90 kilometres away. This was not the first attempt of testing the missile. Last year, the missile missed the target and went into the residential area.

According to the sources, the direction of the missile can be changed via remote control during the war, if the army finds out that the missile is going in the wrong direction. The stabilisers made at Kanpur’s Ordnance Factory Board will work as the wings of birds and the rocket will not work without them.

The sources also said that DRDO is working on Pinaka Mark-3 multi-barrel rocket launcher. The range of Mark-3 can be increased up to 90km or more, which is around one-third more as compared to the 60km range of Mark-2. DRDO is also planning to develop new rockets with bigger range than the Russian rocket.
